Jonathan Lippman has been the Chief Judge of the New York Court of Appeals (New York's highest court) since February 2009. He previously served as Presiding Justice of the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court, First Department.

His career in the court system spans four decades, and began with an entry-level position as court attorney in the Supreme Court in Manhattan.

Chief Judge Lippman was appointed to the bench in 1995 as a judge of the New York Court of Claims. From January 1996 to May 2007, he served as the Chief Administrative Judge of all New York State Courts, which made him the longest-tenured individual ever to serve in that position. In 2005, he was elected as a justice of the Supreme Court for the Ninth and 10th Judicial Districts.

Chief Judge Lippman lectures frequently across the country on access to justice and judicial branch leadership and innovation, and has published numerous articles and essays on these and other topics.
