Edward H. Cooper is the Emeritus Thomas M. Cooley Professor of Law at the University of Michigan Law School. He teaches and writes primarily in the fields of civil procedure and federal jurisdiction. After clerking for Judge Clifford O’Sullivan of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit and practicing law in Detroit, he joined the academic profession as an Associate Professor of Law at the University of Minnesota.

He was elected to the ALI in 1975 and was elected to the Council in 1987. He took Emeritus status in 2013. Professor Cooper served as an Adviser on the International Intellectual Property project; the Transnational Rules of Civil Procedure project; the Recognition & Enforcement of Foreign Judgments project; the Principles of the Law of Aggregate Litigation project; the Complex Litigation project; the Restatement Third, Torts: Apportionment of Liability and Medical Malpractice projects; Restatement Second: Judgements project, and the Federal Judicial Code project.

Professor Cooper currently serves as an Adviser on the Restatement Third, Torts: Miscellaneous Provisons project, and the Restatement Third: Conflicts project.
