Michael Boudin has been a judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the First Circuit since 1992 and served as Chief Judge from 2001 to 2008. Before joining the bench, he served in the Antitrust Division of the Department of Justice and practiced law at the firm of Covington & Burling in Washington, DC.

Judge Boudin was elected to the ALI in 1974 and was elected to the Council in 1980. He took Emeritus status in 2010.

He clerked for Judge Henry J. Friendly of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit and Justice John Harlan of the Supreme Court of the United States.
