William C. Hubbard is Dean and Professor of Law at the University of South Carolina School of Law. Prior to joining the university, he was partner at Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough LLP in Columbia, S.C.
Hubbard is co-founder and Chairman of the Board of the World Justice Project. He served as President of the American Bar Association in 2014-2015 and previously served a two-year term as Chair of the ABA's House of Delegates. Hubbard is a past president of the American Bar Foundation and the American Bar Endowment. He served as a member of University of South Carolina's Board of Trustees from 1986-2020 and as chair of the Board from 1996-2000.
Hubbard is a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers. He received the Order of the Palmetto in 2002, the state’s highest civilian recognition awarded for service to the state of South Carolina. In 2007, Hubbard received the American Inns of Court Professionalism Award for the United States Court of Appeals, Fourth Circuit. In 2016, the Burton Foundation, in collaboration with the Library of Congress, named Hubbard the recipient of its inaugural “Leadership in Law” award. In 2023, he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
Hubbard earned his B.A. and J.D. degrees from the University of South Carolina. He was law clerk to U.S. District Judge Robert F. Chapman.
