The Honorable Damon R. Leichty serves as judge for the United States District Court for the Northern District of Indiana. He received his commission on July 26, 2019 to succeed Judge Robert L. Miller, Jr., for whom Judge Leichty clerked many years before.
Before taking the bench, Judge Leichty was a litigation partner at Barnes & Thornburg LLP where for 18 years he represented clients in complex civil and product litigation in more than 30 federal and state jurisdictions across the United States. His engagements, both regional and national, spanned publicly traded Fortune 500/Global 500 companies to private businesses, manufacturers, shareholders, partnerships, governmental institutions, universities, individuals, and pro bono clients.
Since 2017, Judge Leichty has taught product liability as an adjunct professor at the University of Notre Dame Law School. He also routinely presents on federal practice and procedure. He formerly sat on the Federal Local Rules Advisory Committee for the Northern District of Indiana. He was inducted into the Order of the Barristers.
Judge Leichty received his J.D. cum laude from the Indiana University Maurer School of Law, his M.Litt. from the University of Aberdeen (Scotland), and his A.B. summa cum laude from Wabash College.
A recipient of several awards, Judge Leichty tries to honor the generosity of others by giving back to the community through service on non-profit boards. He is an emeritus board member of the Boys and Girls Club of St. Joseph County. He is president of the Ronald A. Leichty Scholarship Foundation, Inc. that awards collegiate scholarships. He has previously served as director on the boards for the Family & Children’s Center, Inc., the Family & Children’s Center Foundation, the Northern Indiana Center for History, and the South Bend Civic Theatre. He is a past president of the Robert A. Grant Inn of Court.
