Laura I Appleman is the Van Winkle Melton Professor of Law and University Research Integrity Officer at Willamette University College of Law. She teaches and writes in the areas of criminal law & procedure, family law, and sentencing law and policy, and is an expert on criminal juries, the role of profits in the criminal justice system, and the history and influence of eugenics in mass incarceration.  Appleman’s scholarship has been widely published in books and law reviews, including Duke, Northwestern, Boston College, Harvard Civil Rights-Civil Liberties, Ohio State, and Washington & Lee.

A 1998 graduate of Yale Law School, Appleman clerked for Judge A. Wallace Tashima of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. From 2000-05, she was a NYC criminal appellate public defender, where she briefed and argued approximately 50 appeals in New York appellate courts, including the New York Court of Appeals.  Appleman joined the Willamette faculty in 2006.
