National Order of Merit Awarded to John Bellinger
John B. Bellinger III of Arnold & Porter has been awarded the Ordre national du Mérite, National Order of Merit, from France for his contributions to international law.
Established in 1963 by French President Charles de Gaulle, the National Order of Merit is given to individuals who demonstrate "acts of devotion, bravery, generosity, real merit or a measurable commitment to serving others or France." The honor is the highest honor a non-French national can receive.
Bellinger is a globally recognized expert on international law. He joined Arnold & Porter in 2009 after serving as the Senate-confirmed Legal Adviser for the Department of State and Senior Associate Counsel to the President and Legal Adviser to the National Security Council at the White House in the George W. Bush Administration. He was elected to the Institute in 2007 and to its Council in 2016. Bellinger currently serves as co-chair of the recently launched project to complete the remainder of Restatement of the Law Fourth, The Foreign Relations Law of the United States.
