Schepard and Appleton Honored by AALS Section on Family and Juvenile Law

The Association of American Law School’s (AALS) Section on Family and Juvenile Law awarded its inaugural Achievement Award to Andrew Ike Schepard Hofstra University School of Law and Susan Frelich Appleton of Washington University School of Law. 

The AALS Section on Family and Juvenile Law promotes the development and exchange of information relating to teaching and research in the fields of family and juvenile law and promotes collaborative action among those individuals having an interest in these fields. 

Professor Appleton is the Lemma Barkeloo & Phoebe Couzins Professor at Washington University School of Law. She is a widely recognized family law expert and her scholarship and teaching address issues of family, sex, and gender, with publications that include casebooks as well as many articles and book chapters. She is the recipient of a Dukeminier Award from UCLA’s Williams Institute for scholarship on sexual orientation and gender identity law, and Distinguished Faculty and Teaching Awards from her University. An active member of the American Law Institute, she held the position of Secretary of the Institute, has served on its Council since 1994, and serves as an Adviser for Model Penal Code: Sexual Assault and Related Offenses and Restatement of the Law, Children and the Law.

Professor Schepard is the Director of the Center for Children, Families and the Law at Hofstra Law School. He founded Hofstra Law School’s Child and Family Advocacy Fellowship Program that awards full tuition scholarships and paid externships to students pledged to a career in the field. He is also a founder of Parent Education and Custody Effectiveness (P.E.A.C.E), an education program for divorcing and separating parents on how to manage their conflicts over their children responsibly. He is a member of the American Bar Association’s Youth at Risk Commission. He was the Reporter for the Model Standards of Practice for Family and Divorce Mediation approved by the American Bar Association, the Association of Family and Conciliation Courts and the Association for Conflict Resolution and the Reporter for the American Bar Association’s Leadership Summit on Unified Family Courts.
