Honoring John Paul Stevens

Honoring John Paul Stevens

On May 2, the Supreme Court of the United States held a special session to honor Associate Justice John Paul Stevens, who passed away in 2019. Stevens was appointed to the Court in 1975 and retired after 34 years in 2010.

To prepare for the special session, David J. Barron of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the First Circuit chaired the meeting of the Supreme Court Bar that adopted the memorial resolutions for presentation to the Court. Barron and Teresa Wynn Roseborough of Home Depot were co-chairs of the Arrangements Committee. Jamal Greene of Columbia Law School and Carol F. Lee of Taconic Capital Advisors co-chaired the Resolutions Committee. Elizabeth Prelogar of the U.S. Department of Justice provided opening remarks during the special session. Barron, Greene, Lee, and Roseborough all clerked for Stevens during his time on the U.S. Supreme Court.

A summary of the special session is available on SCOTUSblog and a transcript of the event is provided by the U.S. Supreme Court.
